Who we are

A community for Pakistani students — and everyone curious about Pakistan.

PSA is dedicated to spreading awareness of Pakistani culture on campus. Our purpose is to bring the Pakistani community together and create a home away from home for Pakistani students — collaborating with other organizations, hosting cultural events, and showcasing our culture across the U.

Cultural events, all semester

Two to three major cultural events every semester, open to all UM students — Eid celebrations, mock shaadis, general body nights.

A support system, not just a party

Smaller community events designed to build a genuine support network for Pakistani students across campus — ice cream on the green, game nights, chai and complaints.

Objective 03

Fundraising for education in Pakistan

Fundraisers for charitable causes back home, with education as the standing priority. The President works directly with the charity partners.

How PSA actually runs

A real constitution, not a vibe.

PSA is a COSO-registered organization in the Multicultural and Identity-Based category. Here is what the constitution binds the board to.

Active member: Attend 50% of events in a semester. That earns the right to vote and to run for the Executive Board.
Eligibility: Any active member who has been active for a full semester and is nominated (self-nominations allowed, seconds required) can stand for office.
Board seats: President, Vice President, Treasurer — plus a Secretary role PSA has opened by application. One-year terms, spring-to-fall or fall-to-spring.
Meetings: Executive Board every two weeks; general body at least once a semester.
Elections: Nominations open 4 weeks before the vote, the list circulates 1 week before, and quorum is 50% of active membership. Candidates speak, then leave the room.
Money: Everything goes through the Treasurer, who trains with SAFAC and works with the advisor. The President directs how funds are used with charity partners.
Advisor: A full-time UM faculty or staff member, required to be present at annual elections and responsible for the org’s accounts.
Amendments: Unanimous Executive Board approval — or a 2/3 vote of active members present, with 2 weeks’ notice. COSO has final approval.

Before you ask

Questions we get every semester.

Do I have to be Pakistani to join?

No. Membership is open to all University of Miami students, and PSA’s constitution carries an explicit non-discrimination clause covering race, color, sexual orientation, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, marital and veteran status, gender identity and expression, and political or religious affiliation. Events like Game Night and the Eid celebration were advertised as open to everyone at UM.

What counts as being a “member”?

General membership is open to any UM student in good academic standing who has paid the Student Activity Fee and is enrolled full-time (12 undergraduate credits, or 9 for graduate students). Active membership is the tier that matters for voting and running for the board: attend 50% of the semester’s events.

How do I get on the Executive Board?

Be an active member for a full semester, then get nominated — you are allowed to nominate yourself, as long as someone seconds it. Nominations open at least four weeks before the election, and the ballot circulates a week ahead. PSA has also filled seats mid-year by application, including a Secretary opening in February 2025.

Where do events happen?

Mostly the Shalala Student Center — the Grand Ballroom, room 314, and the Iron Arrow Room on the third floor. Outside that: the Rathskeller at 1330 Miller Drive, and Foote Green when the weather cooperates.

How often does PSA run events?

The constitution commits the board to two to three major cultural events per semester, plus smaller community events and fundraisers — with education-focused charitable causes in Pakistan as the standing fundraising priority.
